Why We Run: The Stories Behind Run4Her

Every year, people ask the same question when they first hear about Run4Her.

"How far do I have to run?"

The answer often surprises them.

You don't.

In fact, many of our participants never run a single mile.

Some walk around their neighborhood. Some use a treadmill. Some ride a bike. Some spend the month intentionally moving in whatever way works for them. Others participate simply by fundraising, sharing survivor stories, or helping raise awareness.

Because Run4Her has never really been about running.

It's about people.

Behind Every Step Is a Story

When most people hear the words "domestic violence," they think about a news headline, a police report, or a statistic.

What they don't often see are the stories that continue long after the headlines disappear.

Somewhere today, a survivor is trying to decide whether she is ready to leave.

She may already know the relationship is unhealthy. She may have known for years. But knowing and leaving are not always the same thing.

Leaving often means facing fear, uncertainty, financial hardship, housing challenges, custody concerns, and the overwhelming task of rebuilding an entire life.

For many survivors, leaving is not a single moment. It is a journey.

At the same time, another survivor may be years removed from the abuse but still working to heal. The bruises may be gone, but trauma often lingers long after the physical wounds have faded.

Recovery is rarely a straight line.

It takes time, support, resources, and community.

Domestic Violence Doesn't End When the Relationship Ends

One of the biggest misconceptions about domestic violence is that the story ends when someone leaves.

In reality, that is often where a new chapter begins.

Survivors frequently face challenges related to housing, employment, education, finances, childcare, and emotional healing. Many are forced to rebuild nearly every aspect of their lives from the ground up.

That is one of the reasons Run4Her matters.

The event helps support awareness efforts, survivor programs, scholarships, and resources that help individuals continue moving forward after abuse.

Because surviving is only the first step.

Rebuilding is the next one.

We Also Run for Those We Have Lost

For some participants, Run4Her is deeply personal in another way.

They are not walking for themselves.

They are walking for someone who is no longer here.

A daughter.

A mother.

A sister.

A friend.

A coworker.

A neighbor.

Domestic violence leaves behind more than victims. It leaves behind families, friends, children, and entire communities who continue carrying both grief and memories for years to come.

Many participants join Run4Her each year to honor those lives and ensure they are never forgotten.

Their names may not appear in headlines anymore, but they remain present in the hearts of those who loved them.

Why Awareness Still Matters

Domestic violence thrives in silence.

Many survivors never tell anyone what is happening. Others fear they won't be believed. Some feel trapped by finances, children, housing concerns, or threats from their abuser.

Awareness cannot solve every problem.

But awareness starts conversations.

Conversations lead to understanding.

Understanding leads to support.

And support can change lives.

Every story shared. Every social media post. Every fundraiser. Every conversation started through Run4Her helps bring domestic violence out of the shadows and into the light.

What Is Your Reason?

One of the most powerful things about Run4Her is that no two participants have exactly the same reason for joining.

Some participate because they survived.

Some participate because someone they love survived.

Some participate in memory of someone they lost.

Others participate because they want to help create a future where fewer families experience the devastation domestic violence can cause.

Different stories.

Different journeys.

Different reasons.

But one shared purpose.

As we prepare for another Run4Her challenge, we invite you to think about your own answer to a simple question:

What is your reason?

Who are you walking for?

Who are you honoring?

Who are you supporting?

Who are you hoping to help?

Whatever your answer may be, we invite you to join us this July as we walk, run, move, and raise awareness together.

Because every step tells a story.

And every story matters.
