We Run Together: Why Every Story Matters

Over the years, I have noticed something interesting about the domestic violence community.

The people who find their way here often arrive from very different places.

Some are survivors who are trying to rebuild their lives after abuse.

Some are family members who have spent years supporting someone they love through difficult circumstances.

Some are advocates who have dedicated themselves to raising awareness and helping others find resources.

Some are parents worried about their children.

Some are friends who simply want to understand how they can help.

And some are families carrying the unimaginable loss of a loved one whose life was taken by domestic violence.

At first glance, those groups may not appear to have much in common.

Their stories are different.

Their experiences are different.

Their reasons for being here are different.

Yet year after year, I am reminded that they are connected by something incredibly powerful.

They all understand that domestic violence affects far more people than most realize.

Domestic Violence Is Never Just One Person's Story

One of the biggest misconceptions about domestic violence is that it only impacts the people directly involved in the relationship.

Anyone who has lived through it knows that simply isn't true.

Domestic violence impacts children who grow up witnessing abuse.

It impacts parents who worry about their adult children.

It impacts siblings, friends, coworkers, neighbors, and entire communities.

Even after the abuse ends, the effects often continue for years.

That is one of the reasons awareness matters so much.

Every survivor who shares their story helps someone else feel less alone.

Every advocate who speaks up helps educate another person about the realities of abuse.

Every family willing to tell their loved one's story helps remind the world that domestic violence has consequences that extend far beyond a single household.

Change happens when people stop viewing domestic violence as someone else's problem and begin recognizing it as a community issue that requires a community response.

Why Run4Her Brings People Together

When people first hear about Run4Her, they often assume it is simply a walking or running challenge.

While participants certainly walk, run, and move throughout the month, the event has always been about something much larger.

Run4Her creates an opportunity for people from all walks of life to come together around a shared purpose.

Some participants are walking for themselves and the healing journey they have fought hard to achieve.

Some are walking for survivors who are still finding their way forward.

Some are walking in memory of someone they have lost.

Others are participating because they want to help ensure future generations have greater awareness, better resources, and stronger support systems.

Different reasons.

One purpose.

That purpose is creating awareness, supporting survivors, honoring lives, and refusing to remain silent about an issue that impacts millions of people every year.

The Power of Community in Healing

One of the most encouraging things I have witnessed throughout my years in advocacy is the way complete strangers often come together to support one another.

A survivor shares their story and discovers they are not alone.

A family shares a memory of a loved one and finds others who understand their grief.

A participant joins an event expecting to help someone else and leaves feeling encouraged themselves.

Community cannot erase trauma.

It cannot undo loss.

It cannot change the past.

What it can do is remind people that they do not have to carry those burdens alone.

Sometimes that reminder is more powerful than we realize.

What Will You Bring to Run4Her?

As Run4Her begins, every participant will arrive carrying something different.

Some will bring hope.

Some will bring healing.

Some will bring memories.

Some will bring determination.

Some will bring grief.

Some will bring gratitude.

None of those reasons are more important than another.

What matters is that together they create something larger than any one story.

They create a community.

A community that believes survivors deserve support.

A community that believes awareness saves lives.

A community that believes every person affected by domestic violence deserves to be seen, heard, and valued.

We Run Together

Throughout this month, thousands of steps will be taken for thousands of different reasons.

Some steps will honor the past.

Some will celebrate healing.

Some will support survivors who are still rebuilding.

Some will be taken in memory of people who should still be here.

All of them matter.

Because every story matters.

Every survivor matters.

Every family matters.

And every person willing to stand up and say that domestic violence has no place in our communities matters.

That is why we run.

That is why we walk.

That is why we move.

Most importantly, that is why we do it together.
